The marbling is caused by the high amount of fat that is interspersed within the muscle, which results in amazing flavor, tenderness and richness. The Australian Wagyu Association (AWA) is the only Halal certifier for Wagyu in Australia, and all Wagyu produced by AWA members is Halal certified.
Halal certification for beef goes far beyond the slaughter method. It's a comprehensive system that governs every stage of the animal's life and processing. The Arabic word "halal" means "permissible," and for beef to earn this designation, it must meet strict Islamic dietary laws derived from the Quran and Hadith.
During the animal's life, halal standards require humane treatment, access to clean water, and feed free from animal byproducts or prohibited substances. The cattle cannot be subjected to unnecessary stress or harm. This aligns closely with ethical farming practices many consumers value regardless of religious background.
At slaughter, a trained Muslim slaughterman must perform the process while reciting a dedication (tasmiya). The animal must be alive and healthy at the time of slaughter. A swift, deep incision severs the major blood vessels in the neck while leaving the spinal cord intact, allowing the heart to pump out blood efficiently. This method, called dhabihah, is considered the most humane when performed correctly and results in thorough blood drainage, which many believe improves meat quality and shelf life.
Post-slaughter, halal beef must be processed in dedicated facilities or on thoroughly cleaned equipment to prevent cross-contamination with non-halal products. Every step of the supply chain — from farm to your freezer — maintains halal integrity through documentation and third-party audits.
We source our halal Wagyu exclusively from Australian producers certified by the Australian Wagyu Association (AWA), which maintains the strictest halal standards in the global beef industry. Every animal in our halal program is raised on AWA member ranches in Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria — regions known for pristine pastures and ethical cattle management.
Our Australian partners employ full-time Islamic supervisors who monitor feeding programs, animal welfare, and pre-slaughter handling. These supervisors work directly with ranch managers to ensure compliance with both AWA and AFIC (Australian Federation of Islamic Councils) standards. The cattle are grain-finished on halal-certified feed blends for 300-500 days, producing the exceptional marbling Wagyu is known for.
Processing occurs at Australian abattoirs specifically designed for halal slaughter, with Muslim slaughtermen trained in both Islamic requirements and animal welfare standards. Each carcass receives individual halal certification, and we maintain full traceability from ranch to retail. When you order halal Wagyu from The Meatery, you're not just getting our word — you're getting documented proof of halal compliance at every stage.
We ship all halal Wagyu frozen with dry ice in insulated packaging to maintain cold chain integrity. Our vacuum-sealed portions arrive in perfect condition, ready for your freezer or immediate thawing. And because we're a family-owned business that takes halal certification seriously, we welcome questions about our sourcing and certification process. We understand this is about faith, not just food.
At The Meatery, we are committed to providing our customers with the highest quality, ethically-produced meat products in the world. Our Halal Wagyu beef products are no exception, and we are proud to offer a wide selection of Halal-certified Wagyu beef to our customers.
We deeply respect the religious belief behind following a Halal diet, which is why we go to great lengths to ensure that our Wagyu beef is certified Halal, from the breeding and feeding of the animal to the processing and packaging of the meat.
Halal certification is a specific process that ensures that the meat has been produced in accordance with Islamic dietary laws. This includes guidelines for animal welfare, diet, and slaughter, which are followed throughout the animal's life and during the slaughtering process. We are proud to say that all of our Australian Wagyu, and all Australian beef products we carry for that matter, are certified Halal.
We believe that our Australian Wagyu is the best on the market, not just because of its Halal certification, but also because of its superior quality and taste. The high marbling of our Australian Wagyu leads to a tender and juicy steak that is unlike anything else you've ever tasted. We take pride in our commitment to ethical and sustainable farming practices, which are reflected in the quality of our meat products.
Finding genuine halal Wagyu in the US market is challenging for several reasons. First, the vast majority of American and Japanese Wagyu is not processed according to halal standards. Japanese beef, despite its legendary quality, is almost never halal-certified due to Japan's small Muslim population and lack of halal infrastructure at premium beef facilities. American Wagyu faces similar issues — most US processors aren't set up for halal slaughter, and the extra certification costs deter many ranches from pursuing it.
Australia is the exception. With significant Muslim populations in major cities and a robust halal export market (primarily to Indonesia and Malaysia), Australian beef processors invested heavily in halal certification decades ago. The Australian Wagyu Association made halal compliance mandatory for members, which means virtually all Australian Wagyu is halal by default. This gives Muslim consumers access to world-class Wagyu without compromise.
The Meatery recognized this opportunity early. While competitors focused exclusively on Japanese A5 (impressive but not halal), we built relationships with Australian producers who could deliver both exceptional marbling and religious compliance. Today, we're one of the few US retailers offering a full range of halal Wagyu cuts — ribeye, strip, tenderloin, brisket, and ground beef — all certified and traceable.
We're proud to serve Muslim families, halal-conscious consumers, and anyone who values ethical sourcing. Halal Wagyu shouldn't be rare or hard to find. At The Meatery, it's a core part of our mission.
Is all Wagyu from The Meatery halal? No. Our Japanese A5 Wagyu and American Wagyu are not halal certified. Only our Australian Wagyu carries halal certification. We clearly mark halal products in this collection and on individual product pages.
Can I see the halal certification documents? Yes. We maintain digital copies of AWA certification and can provide them upon request. Contact our customer service team and we'll send documentation for your specific order.
Is halal Wagyu less flavorful than non-halal? Absolutely not. The halal slaughter method, when performed correctly, doesn't impact flavor or texture. Our halal Australian Wagyu scores MS 6-9+ and delivers the same buttery richness and marbling you'd expect from premium Wagyu.
Does halal certification cost more? In our case, no. We price halal Australian Wagyu the same as non-halal Australian Wagyu (if we carried it, which we don't). You're paying for the quality of the beef, not the certification. Halal is standard for our Australian sourcing, not a premium add-on.
Can non-Muslims eat halal Wagyu? Of course. Halal standards emphasize humane treatment and quality, which appeals to anyone who cares about how their food is raised and processed. Many of our halal Wagyu customers aren't Muslim — they just want great beef from ethical sources.
What's the difference between halal Australian Wagyu and halal American Wagyu? Halal American Wagyu is extremely rare. We don't currently carry it because US halal-certified Wagyu processors are few and quality is inconsistent. Australian Wagyu offers better availability, proven quality, and comprehensive halal certification through the AWA system.
